The wood selection was Purple Heart, or Peltogyne spp, a rare wood found in Central and South America. It’s incredibly dense but has a thin diameter stalk, so most lumber is only available in small, reclaimed strips. This selection was left over from a previous client project, so I snatched it up.

The wood sample was so thin it must be pressed to a flat substrate or it would instantly curl.

After cutting the leather hinge and measuring the Chicago Binding Screws, the leather was dyed white and hammered for a buttery softness.

The pieces were assembled and adjusted before sanding and finishing.
